MEMORIES
The idea to visualise my childhood memories developed out of my previous project “Dreams”. While exploring my dreams a lot of memories came to the surface.
I combined my old photographs with an image of a suitable environment which reminded me of my childhood. I have deliberately
chosen to cut and paste in the old fashioned way to go through the process of remembering. Memories are cut outs, snippets, bits torn from reality. By cutting, tearing and pasting I have combined pieces of my visual memories, fantasies and my mother’s tales to create a realistic looking, but unreal image. We don’t know what parts of our memories are true, and what is imagination or fantasy. This ambiguity is what I want to express in my
montages.
Some of the old photographs are cut out, others torn, depending on the context. The cut-outs are sharp realistic memories; the torn ones, painful.
These images are very personal but on the other hand represent childhood memories of the post war generation all over Europe.
